Providing your goats with a well-balanced mineral supplement is one of the most important things you can do to ensure a healthy herd. Hoegger Supply is pleased to offer a supplement that is balanced with vitamins and minerals that will help keep your goats healthy. Reading a mineral label can sometimes be confusing. Why does my goat need this? Listed below are the vitamins and minerals that goats need and why.
Feeding Instructions for Goats 0.5oz to 1oz per goat daily. Depending on body weight and pasture conditions. When goats first start eating this mineral-free choice, they may consume more than the recommended amount. After a short time, their consumption will level out as their bodies become less vitamin and mineral deficient.
Phosphorus and Calcium build strong bones and teeth and aid in reproduction. There is a necessary balance needed for these two vitamins to work properly. Sodium and Chlorine from salt conduct nerve impulses, contract and relax muscles, and maintains the proper balance of water and minerals in the body. Magnesium is essential for bone and teeth and enzyme action, but too much will cause urinary tract problems. Sulfur is necessary for muscle tissue, bone, circulatory and digestive tract. Iron is a mineral that the body needs for growth and development. Iron makes hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body, and myoglobin, a protein that provides oxygen to muscles.
Goats suffering from anemia need iron to rebuild red blood cells. Manganese is essential for bone development. Zinc influences feed utilization. creation of DNA, growth of cells, building proteins, healing damaged tissue, and supporting a healthy immune system. Copper is essential for a healthy immune system in goats. Copper is needed for the proper development of antibodies and white blood cells in addition to antioxidant enzyme production. Copper-deficient goats are more susceptible to infections and hair loss. Cobalt aids in the digestion of carbohydrates. Iodine is important for proper thyroid functions. Selenium is involved in enzyme reactions. Many parts of the United States are deficient in Selenium. Selenium helps prevent White Muscle Disease.
Vitamin A is necessary for the maintenance of Epithelial Tissue, and vision and for normal bone metabolism. What is the epithelium? The epithelium is a type of body tissue that forms the covering on all internal and external surfaces of your body, lines body cavities and hollow organs, and is the major tissue in glands.
Vitamin D is necessary for adequate absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin E is a nutrient that's important to vision, reproduction, and the health of the blood, brain, and skin.
Vitamin E also has antioxidant properties.
Used along with Selenium helps prevent White Muscle Disease in kids. Keep in mind that more is not necessarily better. If you use a good mineral like Hoegger’s Premium Mineral Blend, additional Selenium will probably not be needed.
If you think your goat might need extra selenium, we suggest you consult your Vet and have a soil sample done. Too much Selenium can be toxic. It can sometimes be difficult to get your goats to eat minerals. Hoegger’s Premium Blend has added natural molasses similar to what is found in sweet feed. Most goats find our blend to be a tasty treat. Finally, if your goats have never been on a mineral regimen, they usually will eat a lot at first, but taper off as their bodies get the vitamins and minerals they need.
